Our chopsticks are virtually maintenance free and impervious to most abuse but there are a few maintenance tips that we would like to share with you so that you may keep yours in the best possible condition.

Cleaning - Chopstick models that do not contain aluminum elements (Shinki models bought in 2012 and later here or 2013 and later on Amazon, Arumi models bought in 2013 and later, or Hafu.) can simply be cleaned in the dishwasher with the rest of your flatware. However, it is not advisable to clean any aluminum-banded chopsticks in the dishwasher as the harsh detergents and high temperatures can tarnish the aluminum. To clean these models it is recommended to use a mild dishwashing liquid (i.e. Dawn, Palmolive).

Protection - Carbon fiber is a very neutral substance and impervious to most chemicals; therefore, our chopsticks are not coated with any coatings or lacquers. Aluminum, on the other hand, can tarnish over time. The aluminum bands on our older Shinki and Arumi models were left untreated. We've found that the best way to protect these bands and to keep the carbon fiber on all of the models clean, black, and shiny is to rub the chopsticks down with a paper towel that has a dab of "Butcher Block Conditioner" or food grade mineral oil on it. After that, the chopsticks can then be wiped down with a dry paper towel. This treatment should be done about once a month to keep your CBL chopsticks looking like new. Please note, however, that this treatment is completely optional and is only suggested if you wish to bring out the utmost beauty of our chopsticks.
